Living in Italy is nice because third spaces are everywhere (piazzas) and they are very much used in the warmer months esp by teenagers. When I was a student in San Diego I studied at a Cafe called the living room. I'd spend hours there with cheap, burnt coffee and $. 25 refills. I think it's hard for young people today. They get kicked out of everywhere unless they are spending money.

Every time I travel or move somewhere new, I look for this place. Sometimes it's a specific table at a coffee shop or at the bar, sometimes it's a specific rock on a beach. I think what ties them together are corners. I like a space where I can look out at the world, at people passing by, but where I can also feel like I'm somehow protected, with something physical to lean on, where nobody can see whatever private thing I'm writing or reading about.

I like that, it makes me think of how cats choose their preferred perch.
